Employ Yourself – The SideHustlers Edition
By Pierre A. Clark

It’s been a long time since I wrote the original columns that spotlighted self-employment, creating your own job, and building a business. Now, a quarter of the way into the 21st century, everyone is catching on to what I learned decades ago: anyone can employ themselves, create their own business, and become an entrepreneur — and be Homefree.

It wasn’t easy then, and it isn’t easy now — because freedom is never free. Becoming a successful entrepreneur costs time, money, and most of all, effort. You have to believe the saying: If you can make a dollar, you can make a million. And if you can make a million, you can make a billion.

Take Grant Cardone — the entrepreneur-pastor of the economic freedom church — who popularized the 10x wealth-building movement. He did just that. And many others have done it too, through the boom years of the 1990s, the dot-com bust, the 2008 recession, and the pandemic shutdowns of 2020–2023.

People are getting laid off and forced to embrace the gospel of the small business and the side hustle — creating new first, second, and third jobs. In many cases, they’re turning those side hustles into their main source of income.

Somehow, by the late 20th century, I knew the hustler would be king. I said it to anyone who would listen. Entrepreneurship was once looked down on as a hustle — a shady way to make money you only tried if you couldn’t get a “real” job. Business gurus promoting real estate, multilevel marketing, or other money-making ventures were dismissed as con artists, exploiting people looking for a quick buck.

But now? Entrepreneurship and side hustles are being celebrated everywhere.

Because I knew: you can’t depend on someone else to provide you a job forever. If you want to be truly financially free, you must create an income stream you control.

The past 25–30 years have proved it. Technology made workers expendable. Layoffs became standard. Jobs were outsourced overseas to people willing to work for a tenth of U.S. wages. The middle class got squeezed. Meanwhile, companies streamlined operations and launched the gig economy — Uber, DoorDash, Airbnb, and more.

I’ve learned it’s easier than ever to start, launch, and finance a business — but harder than ever to run one profitably, especially if your products or services don’t solve a pressing problem or satisfy a specific desire.

That said, there are thousands of everyday tasks and processes that can be turned into viable business opportunities.

People crave valueconvenience, and efficiency more than ever — and they’re willing to pay for it. These needs define the modern business landscape. There’s never been more demand for products and services that make life easier.

So — is now the best time to join the side hustle revolution?

Yes, it is. With more resources, platforms, and communities available than ever, I see many, many more opportunities for starting successful side hustles and businesses.

If you’ve ever thought about earning extra income, wondered whether a side hustle could support your goals, or you're looking for ideas, tools, clients, or just the right strategy — then you’ve come to the right place.

Now is the time to embrace the entrepreneurial spirit — just like the millions who are creating and operating their own freedom.
